Which way should I face my subs?!

This is a hot topic for debate! There are opposite views from many people. Here's my theory...

Image a horn or a siren. How do they use structure to create loudness? Easy - they allow a long, expanding path for the sound waves.

If you have a box in your car that faces the front of the car, the sound you hear is coming directly from the speaker. But, if you turn it around, facing the taillights, the sound waves travel deeper into the trunk then reflect, getting (apparently) louder as they travel. This is partially due to the fact that the trunk acts like a horn for the sub box. It's also partially due to the fact that you're giving the long and slow 40-100Hz sound waves longer to complete a cycle. Think about how low and loud a properly installed Bazooka is... It's all due to 'corner loading', which creates a horn with the Bazooka driver right in the center!

This effect is especially noticable in 82-92 Camaros and Firebirds. If you drop a 8 inch bazooka into the bottom of the 'well', you'll get enough bass to choke on!

Some enclosures are designed with this advantage built right in. They're called 'slot loaded' or 'horn loaded' enclosures, in which the speaker is covered by another wall that forms a 'V'-shape with all the sound coming out of the large opening...

I agree with that. I have had the best response from the inclosure's facing away from the rear seat's. -Josh-

I have found that there are basically pros and cons to foward and rear firing box designs. by bouncing the sound off of the trunk you gain a lot more volume/boom, but you lose a lot of quality that the sub is capable of. In my car <str8 ghetto, no custom enclosures, no dynomat, everything is done by me> if you face them to the rear, you also have a lot of secondary buzzing and rattaling. that is just my observations, do with it what you will

I have done just about everything imaginable with sub placement, but find that if the car rattling can be controlled, the bass tends to sound better with the subs facing the rear.
